Abstract

This sharing session explores recent trends and innovations in computer science that are driving the advancement of emerging technologies. Six major areas are highlighted: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Data Science (DS), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Software Engineering (SE). AI focuses on developing intelligent systems capable of performing tasks associated with human cognition, including reasoning, learning, perception, and decision-making. ML enables computer systems to learn patterns from data and apply computational algorithms to address complex problems without being explicitly programmed for every task. As a specialised subset of ML, DL employs large-scale datasets and multi-layer neural network architectures to develop highly sophisticated predictive and intelligent models. DS integrates statistical methods, data analytics, AI, ML, and DL techniques to extract meaningful insights, identify patterns, and support predictive and evidence-based decision-making. IoT represents a connected computing paradigm in which physical devices, sensors, and systems communicate through digital networks to facilitate real-time data collection, intelligent monitoring, automation, and autonomous operations. Software Engineering provides the systematic principles, methodologies, architectures, and tools required to design, develop, test, deploy, secure, and maintain dependable software systems. It also provides the essential technological foundation for integrating AI, data-driven applications, IoT platforms, and other emerging technologies. Collectively, these six areas are transforming the computer science landscape and enabling the development of intelligent, connected, adaptive, and autonomous systems. The session will discuss their fundamental concepts, current developments, interrelationships, practical applications, implementation challenges, and potential future directions.

Biography: Azlan Mohd Zain (Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in 2010. He is currently a Professor with the Faculty of Computing, UTM. As an academic staff, he has successfully supervised more than 25 postgraduate students and received more than 20 research grant funding to support research students. He has published more than 100 research papers. He has been invited as keynote speaker at over ten international conferences, serves on numerous committees, and has served on editorial board for several international journals.
